OFNHP's Steward training is accomplished in three separate sessions facilitated by AFT or OFNHP staff members. Please check the Event Calendar for future classes. Here are brief class descriptions:
Steward as Leader
This basic training class touches on the primary role of stewards with a focus on communication and leadership. Attendees will come away with a solid base of knowledge and expectations about the role and responsibilities of the union steward. All new OFNHP Stewards who have not previously attended OFNHP training on paid time will be paid to attend this training.
Steward as Advocate
This intermediate training is a deeper dive into the nuts and bolts of member representation for advocates. Weingarten Rights are reviewed along with Duty of Fair Representation issues. The grievance process is discussed along with components of just cause, joint discovery, corrective action and arbitration.
Steward as Organizer
The third and most advanced phase of steward training takes the next step toward union activism where organizing plays an important role. Attendees will learn how to identify important issues and how to involve members in strategic campaigns to effect change in the workplace.
Classes take place at the OFNHP office:
2045 SE Ankeny Street
Portland, OR 97214
Please check the Event Calendar to register for future classes!
